Laboratory Equipments

PDT operates dedicated laboratory facilities, managed by qualified and experienced chemists and engineers, to carry out tests and analysis on well fluids and chemicals for operational and quality control purposes. These tests are performed both on the client’s request and for quality assurance of chemicals. Laboratory work evaluates the behavior of chemicals and drilling fluid formulations under simulated ‘downhole’ conditions of temperature and pressure. Our chemists undertake R&D work to develop new products and formulations for field applications. The laboratories are also utilized to train new engineers.

PDT laboratories are equipped with equipment and apparatus of uppermost standards. Regarding drilling fluid testing equipment, FANN and OFITE testing apparatus have been utilized since the fact that both of them are globally acknowledged in the field of drilling testing equipment.

Rheology is the study of the behavior of fluids. Viscometers, sometimes referred to as rheometers, are used to measure fluid properties.

FANN Model 35 Viscometer

Widely known as the Standard of the Industry for drilling fluid viscosity measurements.

Fann produces a range of true Couette coaxial cylinder rotational viscometers. The Model 35 Viscometer is the best known and most commonly used Fann viscometer.

The test fluid is contained in the annular space or shear gap between the cylinders. Rotation of the outer cylinder at known velocities is accomplished through precision gearing. The viscous drag exerted by the fluid creates a torque on the inner cylinder or bob. This torque is transmitted to a precision spring where its deflection is measured and then related to the test conditions and instrument constants.

This system permits the true simulation of most significant flow process conditions encountered in industrial processing.

Direct Indicating Viscometers combine accuracy with simplicity of design, and are recommended for evaluating materials that are Bingham plastics. Model 35 Viscometers are equipped with factory installed R1 Rotor Sleeve, B1 Bob, F1 Torsion Spring, and a stainless steel sample cup for testing according to American Petroleum Institute Specification RP 13B.

Other rotor-bob combinations and/or torsion springs can be substituted to extend the torque measuring range or to increase the sensitivity of the torque measurement. Shear stress is read directly from a calibrated scale. Plastic viscosity and yield point of a fluid can be determined easily by making two simple subtractions from the observed data when the instrument is used with the R1-B1 combination and the standard F1 torsion spring.

The Model 35 Viscometer has been evaluated for compliance, and fulfils the requirements of EN 61010-1:2010, CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1-2012 and UL61010-2-030:2012.

Marsh Funnel Viscometer

Viscosity and gel strengths are measurements that relate to the flow properties of fluids. The Marsh Funnel Viscometer has been used for many years to obtain an indication of the relative viscosity of drilling fluids (known as Funnel Viscosity). It is calibrated to outflow one quart (946 mL) of fresh water at a temperature of 70 ± 5°F (21 ± 3°C) in 26 ± 0.5 seconds. Marsh Funnel Viscometer is molded from a tough, durable plastic that resists breaking or cracking. A brass orifice assures consistency in all readings.

The most effective means of determining the filtration properties of drilling muds and cement slurries, the Series 300 API Low Pressure Low Temperature (LPLT) Filter Press consists of a mud reservoir mounted
in a frame, a pressure source, a filtering medium, and a graduated cylinder for receiving and measuring filtrate. The basic unit has a cell assembly constructed of Stainless Steel and includes the required screen and
gaskets.

Working pressure is 100 psig and the filtering area is 7.1-in2, as specified in the American Petroleum Institute, API Recommended Practice 13B-1 and 13B-2.

Electrical Stability Tester (EST)

The Electrical Stability (ES) of an oil-based drilling fluid is a property related to its emulsion stability and oil wetting ability.

Fann Instrument Company introduces a new Electrical Stability Tester for use with oil-based drilling fluids. Mud engineers depend on the electrical stability test to monitor a fluid’s emulsion stability and oil-wetting capability. The new tester is simpler to operate and can be used in the lab or in the field anywhere in the world.

The Model 23E Electrical Stability Tester (EST) conforms to the test procedure described in API Recommended Practice 13B-2. It operates on external power or two nine volt batteries. The Model 23E is calibrated in peak volts which is the maximum voltage that the fluid experiences between the two electrodes. Peak voltage may be converted to Root Mean Square (RMS) voltage by multiplying the peak voltage by 0.7071.

FANN Retort Oil and Water 50ml Kit

A retort, sometimes called a still, is used to determine the quantity of liquids and solids in a drilling fluid.

In a retort test, a measured sample of fluid is placed in a cup and heated until the liquid components have been vaporized. The vapors are passed through a condenser and collected in a graduated cylinder or centrifuge tube that has been calibrated to record the volume of the condensed liquids at 20°C.

The distillate is read directly as volume percent of the solids sample’s original volume.

Suspended and dissolved solids are determined by subtracting these from 100 percent of the initial sample. For fresh-water fluids, the relative amount of barite and clay can be estimated. Corrections must be made for salt in the calculation for solids content by volume.

The Oil and Water Retort provides a simple, direct field method for determining the percent by volume of oil and water in samples in drilling mud or in core samples of the formation. The Retort has been found to be especially useful in determining the oil content of emulsion muds.

FANN DR3 Variable Volume Digital Retort

New all-in-one, space saving design with enhanced safety features that enables accurate retorting to any of the three recommended API sample volumes.

The DR3 Digital Retort is a next generation upgrade to the industry standard 10mL and 50mL oil and water retorts. It features digital temperature display and control for precise heating and ease of use. Sand Content Test Kit

The sand content kit is a simple, accurate and inexpensive sieve analysis apparatus for determining the sand content of drilling muds

Sieve analysis is the preferred method for sand content determination because of the reliability of the test and simplicity of equipment. The volume of sand, including that of void spaces between grains, is usually measured and expressed as a percentage by volume of the drilling fluid.

The sand content kit consists of a special 200-mesh sieve 2½ inches in diameter, fastened inside a collar upon which a small funnel is fitted on either end. This is used with a 10 ml glass measuring tube, graduated to read from 0 to 20% the percentage sand by volume. The collar and funnel are made of polyethylene and the screen is made of brass. A 500ml wash bottle and carrying case are included.

Pressurized Mud Balance

Drilling fluids and cement slurries often have a considerable amount of entrained or trapped air that may give erroneous results when determining fluid density using conventional equipment. This air volume may be reduced or eliminated by pressurizing the sample cup, which will then give more accurate density readings of the fluid itself.

The OFITE Pressurized Fluid Density Scale is similar to a standard mud balance. A sample cup of known volume is balanced by a fixed counterweight at the opposite end of a balance beam. A sliding weight rider moves along the graduated scale and a level bubble on the beam indicates when the system is in balance. The position of the rider on the graduated scale indicates the density of the sample.

Constructed of premium metals for durability, accuracy and ease of use, the TRU-WATE Model 141 Mud Balance is an instrument for measuring the absolute density of a fluid sample. With the TRU-WATE Balance, the density of a fluid sample, such as cement slurry, can be measured in a fixed volume sample under pressure.

By pressurizing the sample cup, the entrained air or gas can be decreased to a negligible volume, thus providing a slurry density measurement more closely in agreement with the true density which will be realized under down-hole conditions.

Fann density balances are constructed of premium metals for durability, accuracy and ease of use. A high impact plastic case protects the balance during transport and provides a secure base in its working position.

Measuring Cup, 1000 mL, Plastic

The measuring cup is graduated in fluid ounces (2 – 32 oz) and cubic centimeters (100 – 1,000 cc) and is designed to be used with the Marsh Funnel Viscometer. The heavy duty plastic measuring cup features a double spout and has the two scales molded into the inside of the cup for convenience.

Mud Balance

The Thermocup is designed for controlling the temperature of a mud sample while taking readings with a viscometer. The holes in the stage of OFITE Viscometers have been positioned to hold the heated cups at a 45° angle to the line of the instrument for better accommodation of thermometers and power cables. A removable stainless steel cup (included) makes cleaning safer and easier.
